Severance (Apple TV+)
The most talked-about sci-fi series of recent years, Severance imagines a world where workers can have a surgical procedure that completely separates their work memories from their personal lives. What sounds like a corporate efficiency dream quickly reveals itself as something far more sinister. The pacing, the production design, and the performances are all exceptional. Once you start, stopping is very difficult.
The Expanse (Amazon Prime)
Often described as the most scientifically realistic science fiction TV series ever made, The Expanse is set 200 years in the future when humanity has colonized the solar system. It's a complex political thriller that takes its science seriously — no faster-than-light travel, no artificial gravity. If you can get through the first few episodes (which throw you in cold), you'll discover one of the richest sci-fi universes ever created for television.
Black Mirror (Netflix)
Charlie Brooker's anthology series about technology gone wrong is essential viewing. Each episode is a standalone story exploring the relationship between humanity and the technology we've created. Start with "San Junipero" or "USS Callister" for something more optimistic, or "White Bear" if you want something truly unsettling. No two episodes are alike.
Silo (Apple TV+)
Based on Hugh Howey's bestselling novel trilogy, Silo follows the last remnants of humanity living in a massive underground bunker. Rebecca Ferguson leads an excellent cast in a slow-burn mystery about why the silo exists and what's really outside its walls. A perfect companion series to Severance for fans of Apple TV+ sci-fi.
Foundation (Apple TV+)
Isaac Asimov's classic novel series has finally received an adaptation worthy of the source material. Foundation follows a mathematician who predicts the fall of the galactic empire and attempts to shorten the dark age that follows. It's ambitious, epic, and visually stunning — even if it takes some liberties with the books.
