Best Crime Thrillers to Binge-Watch Right Now

From neo-noir to prestige TV dramas — the best crime thrillers currently streaming across Netflix, Max, and more.

The best crime series and films streaming right now

Crime thrillers are the most reliably compelling genre in television and film. A great heist, whodunit, or gangster story is almost universally gripping. Here are the best crime thrillers currently available on streaming platforms.

Ozark (Netflix)

A financial advisor gets entangled with a Mexican drug cartel and must launder money in the Missouri Ozarks to keep his family alive. Jason Bateman directs several episodes and gives the best dramatic performance of his career. Julia Garner as Ruth Langmore is one of the all-time great TV characters — fierce, funny, and heartbreaking. If you haven't watched Ozark, start tonight.

True Detective: Season 1 (Max)

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play Louisiana detectives investigating a series of ritualistic murders over 17 years. Season 1 of True Detective is one of the finest stretches of television ever produced. Slow, atmospheric, and genuinely disturbing — it's unlike anything else. Note: only Season 1 is essential viewing. The later seasons are independent stories with different casts.

Mindhunter (Netflix)

Based on the true story of FBI agents who pioneered criminal profiling by interviewing serial killers in the late 1970s. David Fincher directs several episodes with his precise, unsettling visual style. It ended on a cliffhanger after two seasons, which is frustrating — but what exists is exceptional.

No Country for Old Men (2007)

The Coen Brothers' adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel is a modern masterpiece. Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh is one of the most terrifying villains in cinema history. The film's refusal to follow genre conventions is intentional and brilliant — though it infuriates some viewers expecting a conventional thriller.

Succession (Max)

While technically a drama about a media dynasty, Succession operates as a slow-burn thriller about power, betrayal, and money. The writing is the sharpest on television, and every season finale delivers genuinely shocking moments. Four seasons. Watch them all.
